Firefighters face many dangers in their line of work. So much so, you’d be forgiven for not listing a risk of cancer among the first few that spring to mind.

Unfortunately, occupational cancer, caused by the inhalation of carcinogens, has been shown to be a real concern for those working in the industry.

In response to growing concerns, the NSW Government has now amended the workers compensation legislation to simplify claims of occupational cancer by NSW firefighters.

The Workers Compensation (Firefighters’ Presumptive Rights to Compensation) Bill has established a presumption that 12 certain kinds of cancer, as prescribed by the legislation, are to be taken to have been caused by occupational conditions for NSW firefighters.
